West End Rowing Club

The West End Rowing Club was established in Ponsonby in 1884, and coaching took place on St Mary’s Bay (Westhaven). With the first regatta triumph documented in 1885, the Club has had early success. The growth of Auckland city throughout the early decades of the twentieth century led to a flourishing of the West End as well.

The loss of practically all of the Club’s vessels in a cyclone that hit Auckland in 1914, with huge seas flooding the boathouse, was overcome. With victory in the Premier Eight on Lake Karapiro in 1949, the Club earned its first red coat (Premier title). This entire crew were chosen as New Zealand’s eight for the 1950 Empire Games, where they came second but just a foot behind Australia’s Gold Medalists.

Following the golden era of West End in the 1950s and 1960s, which included a 47-1 victory and two Olympic Gold medals, the club won another 47 redcoats and 2 Olympic gold medals throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
